While many movies have been set in Las Vegas, few capture the city’s dark side like Casino. This epic story of greed, corruption, and murder gives the audience a glimpse into an era when Las Vegas was run by mob bosses and massive gambling corporations.

The movie is also a masterwork of characterization. Robert De Niro’s performance as Don Rickles is one of his finest, and Sharon Stone delivers a riveting portrayal of Ginger McKenna. She won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in the film, and is considered one of the greatest actresses of all time.

Casino also takes a more active approach to storytelling than Goodfellas, with events often happening because of a character’s poor decisions. This makes the characters feel much more alive and dimensional, and it adds to the tragedy of their downfalls. The fact that the events happen through a progression of bad choices rather than just random chance also lends credibility to the story and makes it more interesting to watch.

Despite being over three hours long, Casino never lags. Thanks to the masterful editing and taut narration, it’s a lean, mean thriller all the way through. It is arguably the best movie in Martin Scorsese’s canon, and is a must-see for any fan of cinema.
